
Círculo's women's support groups have a 13-year history of providing effective psychosocial support to Latinas living with cancer. Círculo offers three general support groups, and one group specifically for young mothers. Groups meet bi-weekly.
Círculo offers three groups for children ages 3 to12, and a group for teenagers between the ages of 13 and 15. These groups provide not only the comfort of a peer group, but also professionally led age-appropriate therapy to help children cope with parent's illness. Groups meet bi-weekly.
CDV began offering a men's support program in 2003. A counselor provides in-hospital support for men diagnosed with cancer at SF General Hospital, and in-home support for Latino men in the terminal phase of their illness. These are the first and only Spanish-language services available for men in San Francisco. The men's support group meets bi-weekly.
CDV staff provides home and hospital visits to terminally ill Latinos as well as to those too ill to attend a support group due to surgery or cancer treatments.
For Latinos living with cancer who need more than group support.
Connects newly diagnosed Latinas with an Angelita who has had a similar diagnosis and treatment experience. Las Angelitas share their experience, provide one-to-one support, accompany clients to a medical appointment, and assist in the home when needed.
Since 1996 this program has provided immediate support to newly diagnosed Latinas at San Francisco General Hospital's Breast Clinic. Translation, educational materials, and advocacy services are also provided through this special program. A similar program has been developed at General Hospital's Oncology Clinic for Latino men.
In partnership with the San Francisco American Cancer Society, this program provides prostheses, bras, wigs, turbans, and makeovers free of charge to women undergoing cancer treatment.
Círculo provides information in Spanish on all types of cancer, treatments and their side effects, breast reconstruction, and other relevant cancer information.
In partnership with San Francisco General Hospital educational classes are offered to Latinos living with cancer and their families. Each series runs twelve weeks and includes topics such as the latest cancer treatments, depression, nutrition, therapeutic massage, and management of cancer related symptoms.
Prepares graduate students for work with Latino cancer patients. The program introduces students to the emotional as well as physical impact of a cancer diagnosis on Latinos and their families. Training provided in individual, family and group counseling.
CDV assists community organizations in developing Spanish-language support groups for Latinos living with cancer. The program offers facilitator training, developing infrastructure for support programs, building community partnerships, and outreach.
Círculo de Vida has worked with organizations in Watsonville, Union City, and Pittsburg. CDV is currently working with San Mateo County to develop a Spanish-language support program for Latinas living with cancer.
